The Stepford Runner

By the seasideOne thing I love about running when away from home is the surprise factor.  To borrow a phrase from Forest Gump, it’s just like a box of chocolates; you don’t know what you’re gunna get.

Staying by the seaside on this spectacularly warm day, I had to go running, it would be rude not to!  I ran the mile or so down to the beach and along the sea front, very nice it was too.  By and by the path became a little rougher, sometimes grassy and it was serious dog-walker territory.  Then it seemed like I had transitioned into a parallel universe.

Keep out!I had always thought that “gated communities” of mansion like houses for the rich and/or famous was a strictly American phenomenen but the “Willowhayne” estate in East Preston is like Stepford but over-here.  To be honest, I am not 100% sure I should have been there but the sign on the path saying this was private property and you (as a non resident) are not at all welcome, was next to one pointing down the path saying “public footpath”.  I think I’d be on solid ground saying there were mixed messages there but in my book, public footpaths trump grumpy landowners!

One thing that struck me (apart from the jaw-droppingly gorgeous houses) was that there were no people about; on foot or in a vehicle.  To be honest I was quite glad about that because I was quite expecting to be accosted at any moment by some security guard saying  “what the hell are you doing here”!  This is definitely one occasion that I am glad this is the UK and even if a security man did get the hump, at least he wouldn’t be carrying a gun!

All in all it was definitely the poshest housing estate I’ve ever been in and a reminder of how I love exploring.

How to make a cake that looks like a running shoe

CakeIt was the Wakefield Distance League season final this evening and a great time was had by all.  Did I win? Not a cat’s chance but I was more than pipped at the post for the over 50s title by my darling wife!  Family competitiveness aside, I am really proud of her and it’s persistence that’s the key so the title is truly deserved.  I remember the first time we ran in the league around 8 years ago she won the main Women’s title even after missing the first race of the season!

As for me?  Well since I have been on performance enhancing drugs (a.k.a high-strength iron supplements on prescription) I finally seem to be running better so I am really looking forward to the Great North Run at the weekend!  Maybe in the next Distance League season I can take back the Over 50s title!

Finally , to even out matters I did manage to win the cake competition (after all, it is a running club)!  If anyone is wondering how you make a cake that looks like a running shoe and you really want to make one, well research it on the Internet, it isn’t rocket science (but it does require a good deal of patience)!

Bling alert!

HonleyI watched a video about Olympic Gold Medals and was astonished about the weight and cost of these things (in terms of raw metal).  A “Gold” medal of course isn’t really made of pure gold but of silver with gold plating but even so, this makes a modern one (like those issued in London or Rio) weigh around half a kilo (or a pound in English)!  Unfortunately, I’m not an Olympic athlete but that doesn’t matter because I’ve just seen a photo of the amazing medal that I will get if I complete 100 miles  in August!  This certainly is going to motivate me to finish the job!  All the Awesome Virtual Running Events medals are amazing but they have really pulled the stops out this month with the Olympic themed August medal! Other running organisers take note.

So, I’ve done 89 this month to date and this includes the challenging Honley 10K trail race today.  The label on the tin said “easy to medium” but I can’t on earth think where they got “easy” from.  Don’t get me wrong, this is strangely my cup of tea, hills (up and down), mud to justify my trail shoes and the amazing Yorkshire countryside –  what’s not to like!

With a moderately wam (17 degrees) morning with practically no wind, today was quite a contrast with the dead flat Escrick 10K last week where the wind was the main hazard, boy do I hate wind!

No bling last week or today (will they ever learn) but hay, 11 more miles in the next few days and I’ll get the Awesome 100 mile August challenge medal.  You might think I only do this running thing for medals.  You’d be wrong but, it’s a great bonus.
